How West Ham Have Lined up Recently

Alphonse Areola has started every Premier League match for West Ham so far this season, yet has only kept one clean sheet which came in a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace in the second match of the season. On top of this, he scored an unfortunate own goal at the weekend in a 4-1 defeat.

Lopetegui has changed the back a few times this season yet has slowly started to find consistency. He opted for a back three of Max Kilman, Edson Alvarez, and Konstantinos Mavropanos against Chelsea earlier on in the season. That said, Lopetegui has consistently played Emerson at left-back with a centre-back partnership of Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo, with Wan Bissaka at right-back.

In their latest home Premier League match, all four attacking-minded players scored. Michail Antonio opened the scoring before Mohammed Kudus regained the lead in the 43’ minute. Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta also found the back of the net in a convincing display. Against Tottenham however, Lopetegui opted for three in a defensively-minded midfield, with Tomas Soucek, Guido Rodriguez and Paqueta. There was a front three of Bowen, Antonio and Kudus, with the latter scoring and getting sent off for an on-field fight.

Hammers Recent Form

Lopetegui’s side have been in mixed form ahead of their game against Manchester United. In their latest Premier League home match, the Hammers stormed to a convincing 4-1 victory against Ipswich Town, which was only their second win of the season. Despite conceding once again early on, the hosts dominated the match with 23 shots in total, of which 13 were on target. On top of this, the Hammers created nine big chances, as many as Ipswich had shots in total. Alongside an xG of 3.79, the hosts ran away in a fantastic win.

However, in their last game, they fell to a 4-1 defeat to rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who have also had mixed fortunes at the start of this season. Kudus gave the Hammers the lead in the 18th minute, but went in level at the break, before defensively collapsing in the second half. West Ham sit 15th in the Premier League, with an average of one point per game. A win would place them above Man United on goal difference.

Injuries for Lopetegui to Consider

Yet again, the only player that West Ham have unavailable due to injury is Niclas Fullkrug, who is expected to return in late October. He has been ruled out with an injury since the 9th of September. Fullkrug was signed last season from Borussia Dortmund, where he made 43 appearances for the BVB, finding the back of the net 15 times and gaining 11 assists.

The Hammers are also without Kudus. He was sent off in their defeat to Tottenham and will face a minimum suspension of three games. The club had until yesterday to challenge the charges from the FA.
