FPL Tips: Three Defenders Who Should Be High Priority for Gameweek 8

Trent Alexander-Arnold fires a free kick towards goal

With FPL’s Gameweek 8 deadline less than 24 hours away, here are three defenders who could be key to some big points hauls this weekend.

Three Defenders to Choose From for FPL Gameweek 8

Nikola Milenkovic – Nottingham Forest (vs Crystal Palace) – £4.5 Million

A cornerstone of the second-best defence in England’s top-flight, Nikola Milenkovic should absolutely be an option this weekend for FPL players. Especially those struggling for funds and in need of a cheap option. Despite not featuring in the first game of the season, the 27-year-old Serbian has gone on to play every single minute in each of Forest’s six matches, conceding just four goals alongside Murillo at the heart of his side’s backline.

Accumulating 22 points up to this point, Milenkovic is the second highest-scoring Forest defender after Ola Aina, so banking on him to increase that total against a Palace side who have just four league goals this campaign wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Ruben Dias – Manchester City (vs Wolves) – £5.5 Million

When it comes to picking Manchester City players for FPL, there is always the possibility that the Pep roulette ruins people’s teams for the weekend. However, with winless Wolves coming up against unbeaten City on Sunday, picking Dias could be a guarantee for easy points.

Another defender who’s played the full 90 minutes in all but one of the seven league games so far for his club, it would definitely come as a surprise if the Portuguese international didn’t start from the off against Gary O’Neill’s side and at the reasonable price of £5.5 million, this is a low-risk, high-reward pick.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – Liverpool (vs Chelsea) – £7.1 Million

This Sunday, the league’s best defence comes up against the league’s second-best attack as the two managers who are settling in at their new teams face off for the first time. Arne Slot has taken to Liverpool like a duck to water, winning six of his first seven league games while September’s Manager of the Month Enzo Maresca is seemingly starting to get the best out of his Chelsea players as they sit 4th, behind only Arsenal, Manchester City and their opponents this weekend, with those three sides many people’s frontrunners in the race to win the title.

With the Reds looking pretty imperious at the back, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the high-cost option for this weekend. The highest-scoring defender in FPL so far (41), the 26-year-old is the defender most Liverpool fans would look towards for a goal contribution, most likely from a free-kick, something which he demonstrated over the international break when he curled a beauty into the top corner during England’s 3-1 win over Finland earlier on Sunday.

With Chelsea’s young defence prone to lapses of concentration at the back at times, they’ll need to remember they could be in real danger should Trent fancy stepping up to strike a freekick if the distance is a realistic one.

A certainty to start at right-back for his side when fully fit, a price rise for the fullback could potentially be on the cards should the Reds continue their impressive defensive record when they face the Blues this weekend, so get him in while he is still a reasonable cost.
