Chelsea got their 2024/25 UEFA Europa Conference League campaign off to an ideal start with a dominant 4-2 win over KRC Gent. Enzo Maresca is aiming to use several key youngsters in the competition. Josh Acheampong didn’t see the field in the opening league fixture which raised some eyebrows among fans.
Chelsea Consider Josh Acheampong As Key For Future Success
Acheampong’s Links To Newcastle United Clarified
The 18-year-old full-back, who has only made one appearance for the senior Chelsea side this season, is attracting attention from other clubs. It was reported that Newcastle United are attentive towards his situation and might look to make a move for him next year.

Fabrizio Romano has now downplayed these links by insisting that there is no “situation” about the possibility of the Blues selling the youngster anytime soon. The journalist adds that Acheampong is considered as an important talent at Stamford Bridge and that his quality is really appreciated by the coach as well as his coaching staff.
It’s also stated that there have been no talks between him and Newcastle or any other club, and that he is one of the young players trusted by the London club’s management.
Could Acheampong Have His Breakthrough At Chelsea This Season?
The only appearance that the 18-year-old defender has made for Chelsea this season was as a substitute in their big win over Barrow FC in the Carabao Cup third round clash at Stamford Bridge. But the Englishman knows that there is place for more competition in that right-back position in the Blues’ squad, especially with captain Reece James still struggling with injuries and finding it difficult to nail down that spot in the team.

While Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana, and Axel Disasi have all played in that position this season, Maresca could be forced to call up Acheampong into his squad permanently if he’s able to perform strongly in the youth scene.
The youngster has made three appearances for Chelsea’s under-21 side this season, providing one assist. If he can get more goal contributions and really dominate opposition players in the Premier League 2, then the 18-year-old might get his major senior breakthrough in the senior squad with Maresca having hailed him as someone who can become a “top defender” in the future.
