Oxford United September Round-Up: Squad Decisions and Decent Start Continued

Team News

The month began with the news that Kyle Edwards had signed a four month deal. The 26-year-old, who joined on loan from Ipswich last season, struggled for game time after missing much of his spell out with injury. However, following his release from Portman Road, he remained with the U’s to continue his rehab.

James Golding then left the club to join Maidenhead on loan. The 20-year-old also spent time at York Road last season.

Des Buckingham then announced his 25-man squad for the upcoming campaign until January. Following the arrival of Edwards, the U’s were two senior players over the squad cap so goalkeeper Simon Eastwood was one to miss out, along with full-back Joe Bennett, who will be sidelined until the new year with a hamstring injury.

Mark Harris was then nominated for Player of the Month for August. The 25-year-old netted four goals in four games, including a goal of the season contender against Blackburn. The following day, the striker picked up the award.

Results

Oxford returned to league action and kept their winning home run intact with a 1-0 victory over Stoke. Idris El Mizouni netted his first U’s goal just after the restart.

On the road, the search for points continue after the U’s lost 2-1 at Bristol City. Like at Blackburn, Oxford took the lead in the game with Ruben Rodrigues calmly slotting home before Mark Harris missed from three yards after the restart. The miss was costly with the Robins levelling minutes later before Harris conceded a penalty which was successfully dispatched.

Back at home, Oxford remained unbeaten but dropped points for the first time against Burnley. However, it was a disciplined display in their goalless draw against the Clarets.
