Gordon Silences Transfer Rumours

Although Gordon nearly left St James’ Park last June, he has started every league match this season. He has been “integral” as he rivals Harvey Barnes for the spot at left-wing.

However, Liverpool were interested in the Englishman’s services in the summer as Newcastle were looking to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules. The Magpies were looking to exchange Gordon for Jarell Quansah or Joe Gomez, but Liverpool refused.

Since then, Gordon’s position in the squad has come under more intense scrutiny after Barnes has made an impressive start to the season. Both players prefer to play on the left, and Gordon has had to shift to the right when both have played.

He has now committed his future to Newcastle in a deal which will make him one of the highest earners in the club. Fans can now expect him to be part of their plans for years to come.

How Does This Contract Affect Newcastle’s Starting Lineup?

It was arguably short-sighted on Newcastle’s side to recruit two high-quality left-wingers, especially with a glaring gap on the right. Newcastle have started the season well, despite this lack of cohesion.

Gordon’s versatility as a utility player is almost working against him. Last season, Gordon cemented his place on the left during Barnes’ lengthy injury absence.

Now, however, it is Gordon who has to accommodate for his compatriot. He is stronger than Barnes on the right, as he plays wider on the pitch. This means that he can provide more crosses with his stronger right foot.

Barnes, on the other hand, cuts into the penalty area, where he can take shots and pose a more direct threat.

Either way, this situation could provide long-term issues for Eddie Howe and Newcastle as he juggles two elite players. For now, Gordon is here to stay and has a future as a Magpie.
