Euros Star Doubt for Upcoming Fixtures

Speaking after his side’s midweek win against Leganés, Ernesto Valverde confirmed that Nico Williams has suffered a “sprain”. So far, the extent of the injury is unclear and will become known in the “next few days”.

Athletic were playing on Thursday night due to Europa League commitments coming up next week when this fixture was meant to be played. Nico Williams will now be hoping to recover before the continental clash with AS Roma.

Before that, they must host entertaining Celta Vigo at the weekend – a fixture that Nico Williams is now unlikely to feature in.

Hurt in Strong Tackle

Just before the break, Williams found himself heading towards the byline when full-back Valentin Rosier charged in to rob him of the ball. The Frenchman won the tackle cleanly, but Williams felt the full force of the follow-through, causing him to stay down hurt.

The “Euro 2024 star” managed to carry on until the half-time whistle with Athletic being held to a 0-0 draw. However, manager Valverde along with medical staff opted to keep Williams from re-entering the field for the second period, judging the impact to be somewhat serious.

Reasons to Celebrate Still

The substitution proved to be worthwhile as it was Nico’s replacement, Gorka Guruzeta, who assisted the opener for the Basques. It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Williams family either as big brother Iñaki Williams was subbed on in the 56th minute and doubled Athletic’s lead.

Athletic have now won three of their last four La Liga matches and will hope to extend that run against Celta on Sunday.
