Liverpool’s “star” goalkeeper Alisson Becker is doubtful for this weekend’s clash against Bournemouth after missing training. The 31-year-old aggravated an existing hamstring issue in the Champions League victory against AC Milan. His replacement, Caoimhin Kelleher, hasn’t played competitively for the Reds since a 3-0 loss to Atalanta in April. The Brazilian will join Harvey Elliott in the AXA Training Centre injury room after the youngster fractured his foot on international duty. Fitness Issues Continue for Alisson
Alisson’s fitness record of late has been poor, he missed ten Premier League games last season and only played twice in the Europa League. No goalkeeper has missed more games through injury or illness than the Brazilian’s 40 since 2019/20. This is a concern for Liverpool, and Giorgi Mamardashvili’s arrival next season will provide more cover between the sticks. The 23-year-old shone during Euro 2024 and will be a great replacement for Liverpool’s long-serving goalkeeper when he eventually leaves.

In the eighteen games missed by Alisson last season, backup goalkeeper Kelleher shone. The Irish international established himself as a capable number-one in the Premier League and was linked with a move away this summer. In 2020, the absence of a capable number two cost Liverpool the chance to win the Champions League. Backup Adrian made a costly mistake against Atletico Madrid that led to the Reds’ elimination. The 31-year-old’s injury issues have cost his side in the past, however the emergence of a successful backup means Arne Slot can be patient with his goalkeeper.
Opportunity Comes at the Right Time for Kelleher
Although Kelleher hasn’t played for Liverpool since April, he recently played twice for Ireland during September’s international break. In the game against England, Kelleher impressed making seven saves. Playing recently in such a high-level game will have kept the goalkeeper sharp, something that has proven key to his form in the past.

At the start of last season, Kelleher struggled in the Europa League and EFL Cup, only making two saves through his first three appearances of the season. The Irishman also failed to impress in his first Premier League start of the season against Fulham, making an error leading a goal in a 4-3 win. Once the 25-year-old got a regular run of games in February, he proved his true worth and helped the Reds to victory in the EFL Cup final over Chelsea.

Kelleher had a good preseason and got minutes with Ireland so should be able to hit the ground running against Bournemouth. If the 25-year-old wants to be a number-one goalkeeper, he needs to prove his worth when he gets an opportunity.
