‘Erik ten Hag Not the Only Reason’: Manchester United Signing Reveals Motivation for Joining: Matthijs De Ligt

Manchester United have had a questionable start to the 2024/25 Premier League season and have already lost two of their three matches so far. However, there is still a sense of optimism that the new signings will help turn things around, and centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has now opened up on the reason for his move to Old Trafford.

Why Did de Ligt Choose United Move?

The Dutch defender has squashed speculation that he only joined the Red Devils in an effort to reunite with the manager who had given him his breakthrough at Ajax and even made him the youngest captain of the club’s history in 2018.

De Ligt spoke of his motivation to join United after featuring in the Netherlands’ 5-2 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the UEFA Nations League, telling Vandaag Inside: “Erik ten Hag was not the only reason I joined Manchester United. We are talking about Manchester United here, one of the biggest clubs in the world. There is a lot of pressure because the fans are used to things from the past, up to us!”

Stiff Competition at Old Trafford

Even though he has gained quite a lot of popularity since his move to Old Trafford, de Ligt will be facing a lot of heavy competition for a starting spot in the Red Devils’ backline. He was not the only centre-back signed by United in the summer, as they also roped in a quality young defender in Leny Yoro. The Frenchman is currently recovering from an injury but is expected to strongly push for a starting role once he’s fully fit.

Apart from Yoro, De Ligt also faces competition from Harry Maguire in ten Hag’s squad. The Dutchman will need to outperform his competition and the best way to do so is to help United keep more clean sheets, as they’ve only kept one shutout in the Premier League so far. De Ligt made 30 appearances for Bayern Munich last season, helping them 10 clean sheets, and will need to replicate these numbers to become a guaranteed starter at Old Trafford.
