Barcelona Face Major Blow As ‘Hard-Working’ Euro 2024 Winner Faces Injury

Barcelona Secure Signing of Bundesliga 'Star' Midfielder Following Dominant Euro 2024 Outing

Barcelona have had a fantastic start to the 2024/25 La Liga campaign after winning all of their first four matches under new manager Hansi Flick. But it appears that they have now suffered a major injury blow when it comes to vibrant midfielder Fermin Lopez.

Barcelona Receive Fermin Lopez Injury Blow

What Happened To Lopez?

The 21-year-old midfielder was called up by the Spain under-21 national team for their upcoming fixtures during the international break. But it appears that the midfielder ended up picking up a nasty injury whilst training with the reigning European champions and now faces a spell on the sidelines. Fabrizio Romano has reported that more tests will follow to discover the extent of the knock.

The Spanish Football Federation has confirmed that Fermin picked up a muscle injury in training and will be replaced in the squad by fellow Barcelona midfielder Pablo Torre. The statement from the federation notes: “Change in the call-up for the U-21 national team. Fermin is out due to injury and Pablo Torre joins the training camp.”

This comes right after Lopez played a key role in helping the Spanish under-21 side win the Gold Medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics,  even scoring a brilliant brace in the gold medal match against hosts France.

Lopez Adds To Barcelona’s Injury List

Flick will be worried to see another player pick up an injury as he’s already had to contend with missing quite a few key first-team stars at the beginning of his reign with the Spanish side. The likes of Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong have not been able to begin their campaigns as they recover from injury problems, while young midfielder Gavi is still recovering from the knee injury he sustained last year.

Barcelona also lost defender Andreas Christensen to an injury recently. Marc Bernal, who received his senior debut under Flick, is also out for the rest of the season after picking up an injury in Barcelona’s recent win over Rayo Vallecano. Lopez adds to this injury list and the Blaugrana will now hope that he isn’t out for a long period. The 21-year-old midfielder, who was hailed as “hard-working” by former manager Xavi, scored 11 goals in 42 appearances for the La Liga heavyweights last term.
