Liverpool Submit New Bid 'Close' to Asking Price for Euro 2024 'Rising Star': Giorgi Mamardashvili

Liverpool have reportedly submitted a new bid for Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, as they appear to speed up the pace of their, so far slow, summer transfer window.

Liverpool Bid Higher for Giorgi Mamardashvili

Close to £34 Million Asking Fee

Matteo Moretto has revealed that Liverpool have bidded again for Mamardashvili, and it is now “close” to Valencia’s £34 million asking price. There is expected to be a response from Valencia “soon”.

However, Bournemouth are growing impatient due to the lengthy time that this deal is taking. The Cherries would take the Georgian goalkeeper on loan for one or two seasons before he permanently moves to the Merseyside as the heir to Alisson Becker’s throne. Andoni Iraola’s side have done their business quickly and early this summer, whilst Liverpool are yet to complete a signing. It is unsurprising that they are frustrated, and are “already considering other goalkeepers”.

What Does Giorgi Mamardashvili Transfer Mean for Liverpool’s Goalkeepers?

As mentioned, this transfer should not really threaten Alisson’s hold on the number one shirt at Anfield. Mamardashvili would not join until the summer of 2025 or 2026. However, the Brazilian is only 31-years-old and would likely want to continue his Liverpool career for at least one more season. Perhaps the signing of a new goalkeeper is intended to allow for the sale of Alisson whilst he can still command a relatively big fee from Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, this signing does not spell good news for Caoimhin Kelleher. The Irishman has been part of the senior squad for five years and had his most successful season in 2023/24. He played 26 matches, including ten in the league, and proved critics wrong with some excellent performances. At 25-years-old, he must’ve had his eye on the number one shirt after Alisson’s departure, but this signing appears to spell the end of that dream.

How Do Bournemouth Benefit?

Whilst a loan move for a starting goalkeeper is never ideal, this transfer seems like a great deal for Bournemouth. Mamardashvili is a “rising star” at just 23-years-old, and particularly impressed at Euro 2024.

Meanwhile, Iraola’s current goalkeeper is Norberto Neto, who struggled last season and was criticised for his failure to command his area and claim high balls. He made an error leading to a goal in their season opener, and is generally considered the weak point of the side. This signing would massively bolster their starting lineup.
