Liverpool transfer target Martin Zubimendi has turned down a move to Anfield in favour of staying at Real Sociedad. The defensive midfielder was on Liverpool’s radar but is set to sign a new contract, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Martin Zubimendi Transfer Off as Liverpool Hunt for Number Six
Major Blow for Liverpool
Arne Slot will undoubtedly be disappointed with this news as Zubimendi was his desired midfield recruit. This is further compounded by the fact that they were told that the Spaniard wanted to leave this summer. With the Premier League starting this weekend, Liverpool will need to reshape their strategy for the season ahead quickly. It is unknown whether the Reds will pursue another midfielder this summer.
Zubimendi had a £52 million release clause in his contract, which would have been paid in one instalment. Liverpool were open to paying this fee and were in the middle of negotiating the structure of a deal. A new number six remains a transfer priority, but they have not been linked with other players. Given that the transfer window closes within three weeks, the Reds must act fast to identify an alternative target.

However, the prospect of Slot ending his first transfer window without a signing is becoming a genuine possibility. The Reds are unlikely to bolster their squad in any other areas this summer.
Door Opens For Other Liverpool Players
This news allows many Liverpool players to fight for their place in the starting lineup. Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch both played in defensive midfield during pre-season and Alexis Mac Allister is likely to start.

However, the player likely to benefit the most from Zubimendi’s failed signing is Stefan Bajcetic. The 19-year-old missed last season through a series of injuries which hampered his progress after a strong breakout campaign the year before. Bajcetic would complement Mac Allister well in midfield and could capitalise on the extra opportunities. He is a player with untapped potential and Slot has a history of promoting from within.

This could also impact the departure of other midfielders, including Bobby Clark. Red Bull Salzburg have placed a bid for the 19-year-old and a potential loan to the Championship is on the cards.
It remains to be seen how Liverpool will react to Zubimendi’s news. However, it is almost inevitable that the Reds will open their campaign against Ipswich this Saturday with no new signings.
