USMNT Premier League ‘Star’ Travels to Complete MLS Transfer

USMNT Premier League 'Star' Travels to Complete MLS Transfer

The USMNT’s Tim Ream is set for a permanent transfer to his new club after spending a strong nine years at Fulham. He will return to the Major Soccer League (MLS) after playing in England for 12 and a half years.

Ream to Join Charlotte FC

The Athletic has reported that Ream is travelling to the United States to complete his permanent transfer from Fulham to Charlotte FC. The two clubs have been in talks since June, reaching the advanced stages.

The USMNT “star” was given permission to travel after he did not join the squad on their pre-season tour in Portugal. He will complete his medical in the States and then the transfer will be official.

How Do Fulham Replace Their Long-Serving Warrior?

The replacement for Ream is already at the club, albeit very recently. Jorge Cuenca was signed for £6.7 million from Villarreal, an exciting 24-year-old prospect at centre-back. Alongside him, Calvin Bassey will likely start as Tosin Adarabioyo departed for Chelsea earlier this summer.

However, the centre-back only started 17 matches in the league last campaign, with just four of those coming in the second half of the season. Despite his lengthy service at Craven Cottage, Ream’s departure on the pitch will likely not leave a huge dent.

What Can Ream Bring to Charlotte?

Despite a lack of minutes in the back end of last season (just one start after February), the 36-year-old clearly still has his ability. He started all three matches for the USMNT at Copa America 2024, although this did include two losses.

Ream will bolster an already strong Charlotte defence. They’ve kept nine clean sheets in the MLS, with the second-least goals conceded in either the Eastern or Western division. As an older player, he may not play a large number of minutes.
