Chelsea ‘On Verge’ of Reaching £33.7 Million Transfer Agreement for ‘Priceless’ Midfielder

Chelsea have been working at a rapid pace to bolster their squad in the 2024 summer transfer window. Now it looks like they are now on the verge of finally completing a major sale involving Conor Gallagher.

How Much Are Chelsea Expecting for Gallagher?

Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Blues are now “on the verge” of reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid for the possible sale of the English midfielder. He claims that the two clubs have had productive talks in the last 24 hours; they are now close to agreeing to a deal, with Maresca recently making a teasing comment on the midfielder’s future too.

The journalist states that the transfer is now all down to Gallagher and whether he wants to leave his childhood club to venture on a new journey to the Spanish club. It’s stated that negotiations have accelerated between Chelsea and the La Liga club over the last few days and that a total transfer package of close to £33.7 million has been almost agreed, with only small details to be ironed out for the agreement to be sealed. This would mark a major profit for the Blues, who have developed Gallagher as a player since he was an eight-year-old. The club would rather sell him now than lose him as a free agent in 2025.

What Went Wrong for Gallagher at Chelsea?

Gallagher was an important member of the Blues squad under Mauricio Pochettino in the 2023/24 season. He made 50 appearances across all competitions under the Argentine, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists, and was hailed as “priceless” by the manager. But there are some off-the-field tensions between the midfielder and the upper management due to his inability to sign a new contract.

The 24-year-old midfielder’s current deal with Chelsea expires at the end of June 2025. He has not shown enough enthusiasm for signing a long-term contract, which is why the club are open to negotiating his exit this summer. The England international may have also felt his place in the side threatened with the signing of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall this summer, with the new star likely to be a key part of the midfield having impressed under Maresca at Leicester City. With big-money signing Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo also regular starters, Gallagher can’t be faulted for having doubts over his chances of being a regular at Chelsea going forward and potentially looking at moving somewhere where he’s guaranteed regular minutes.
