Tyler Adams has been hampered by another injury and will be out for months. Playing in the 2024 Copa America aggravated a pre-existing problem and the player will now spend another spell on the sidelines.

Back Surgery for Tyler Adams
Simon Stone has reported that Adams has undergone back surgery following the USMNT’s group-stage exit from the 2024 Copa America. He had felt a problem at the end of the Premier League season but decided to play in the tournament, despite minutes restrictions and pain, because it was “very important for him”.

A mere two days after they were knocked out, Adams underwent back surgery. His club manager, Andoni Iraola, revealed that “he won’t be fit for the start of the season”. Speaking on an exact return date he explained: “It is difficult…September? October? I don’t know”.
Adams’ Poor Injury Record
Since joining Bournemouth last summer, Adams has constantly been thwarted by injuries. He joined for £20 million but was not fit to play until September 27, when he made a 20-minute substitute appearance against Stoke City in the EFL Cup. However, the USMNT “star” was not fully fit, and aggravated his injury. He was reinjured until March 13.

A training injury after his first start on March 30 then saw the player injured until the penultimate game of the Premier League season, where he played nine minutes. This leaves him with a measly four Cherries appearances all season, and just one start. Missing the start of the 2024/25 season must frustrate him greatly, and Iraola is yet again left weak in the midfield. Had Ryan Christie and Lewis Cook not just had renaissance seasons, Bournemouth would be in big trouble.
Will Adams Ever Reach His 2022/23 Levels?
The best season of the American’s career was arguably 2022/23, despite Leeds United’s relegation. He was their standout player, profiling similarly to Casemiro and Joao Palhinha, justifying his £20 million move to the South Coast rather than spending a season in the Championship.

These injuries are definitely limiting the 25-year-old’s development, but when Adams returns he could play a key role in Iraola’s side. The Basque manager has already turned Christie and Cook’s careers around, but the stability brought by a true defensive midfielder could help Bournemouth reach the next level.
In his very limited minutes, Adams did look excellent. He played a key role in Bournemouth’s historic 4-3 victory over Luton, controlling the game tempo and retaining possession as time worked against them. In his only start against Everton, he was easily the best player on the pitch as the Cherries took all three points. Should Adams stay fit after returning, we could see him become one of the ones to watch in the Premier League.
