Manchester United are looking to step up on their transfer plans for the 2024 summer window and bring in new players well before the 2024/25 season begins. It now appears that they are intensifying their pursuit of Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg has reported that the Red Devils are now in contact with the Bavarians over the possibility of permanently signing the Dutch centre-back this summer window. He adds that the defender’s agent Rafaela Pimenta, is working on finding a solution and that the 24-year-old is himself keen on joining Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

The journalist also adds that there is no agreement among the parties over a deal yet and that talks are still taking place. He states that the Bundesliga heavyweights have set a price tag for their player and would only be willing to sell him if United agree to offer them around £42 million plus bonus payments, which is slightly lower than their recently reported demands. The journalist claims that “Ten Hag Really Wants Him” after having worked with De Ligt during his time as Ajax manager.
What Can De Ligt Bring To Old Trafford?
Despite his age, the 24-year-old centre-back already has the experience of playing for top European clubs like Juventus and Bayern Munich, and winning league titles with the two sides too. Upon moving to Germany and the Bavarians, a Bundesliga commentator dubbed him a “monster signing” for the then-champions. But De Ligt had his injury issues last season, restricting him to only making 30 appearances for his club.

Bayern seem to be ready to sell him for the right amount amid interest from the Red Devils, who might be eyeing him as a replacement for the recently departed Raphael Varane. United have reportedly presented a five-year contract offer until 2029 to De Ligt, but will need to seal an agreement with his club to get the deal over the line anytime soon.
