‘Happy to Stay’: Tottenham Sent Message on Future of ‘Unbelievable’ Defender

Djed Spence in action for Genoa

Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to reshape their squad this summer to provide the best possible set of players for Ange Postecoglou in his second season. Now it appears that they have a chance of offloading defender Djed Spence, who doesn’t seem to have a future at the club.

Tottenham Receive Djed Spence Message From Genoa

What Did Genoa CEO Say About Spence?

The 23-year-old full-back spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Serie A side Genoa and made a pretty good impression in Italy. It looks like the Italian side are open to re-signing him again for the 2024/25 season, be it on a permanent basis or another season-long loan.

Genoa’s CEO Andres Blazquez opened up on their stance on the Tottenham defender and stated: “I’d be happy to keep Djed Spence at the club, he was doing great here on loan… but it doesn’t depend on us. Spence would be happy to stay at Genoa. But Tottenham are a rich club.”

This appears to be a clear message that the Italian side will not be able to spend a formidable fee to sign the 23-year-old this summer. It means that Spurs might have to come to a compromise and either sell him for a discounted price or agree to send the full-back out on his fourth loan spell since joining the Lilywhites in 2022.

How Has Tottenham’s Transfer Window Gone So Far?

Spurs have only made one signing in the summer window so far, that to in the form of bringing back Timo Werner from RB Leipzig on loan until the end of the upcoming campaign. They have also released midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from his contract. Emerson Royal is being strongly linked to a potential move to AC Milan and Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing AS Monaco defender Vanderson to possibly replace the Brazilian.

Spence is unlikely to feature for Postecoglou’s side next season after failing to make a mark in his time at the North London side. He was signed by Spurs for his heroics at Middlesbrough as well as Notttingham Forest. He was even hailed as “unbelievable” after playing a key role in helping Nottingham Forest knock out Arsenal from the FA Cup with a special performance. The 23-year-old made 16 appearances in his loan spell at Genoa last season, helping them keep five clean sheets and producing some impressive performances as a wing-back. Now it’s to be seen if he can secure a move back to the Italian club or join some other side this summer.
