David Ornstein Reveals ‘Advanced Interest’ From Manchester United in ‘Complete Player’ With £34m Release Clause

'Exceptional' Manchester United Star is 'Available' to Return to Action Against Southampton: Manuel Ugarte

David Ornstein has revealed interest from Manchester United in Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee, who is currently at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands squad.

United’s Interest in Zirkzee

Ornstein revealed that United are “exploring a deal” for Zirkzee and have “advanced interest”. Whilst there have been no club-to-club talks, they have been speaking to his representatives.

Interestingly, the striker is “among a number of candidates” to join the English giants. This comes as no surprise, with the attack struggling last season: Scott McTominay was their joint-third highest goalscorer in the Premier League.

The journalist continued to confirm that his contract “includes a €40million (£34m) release clause” which Fabrizio Romano had previously revealed.

Other Clubs Interested

Earlier this month, Romano revealed that AC Milan had “informed Bologna that they are planning to trigger the €40 million release clause”. Zirkzee was reportedly “super keen on the AC Milan project”, though reports have slowed in recent weeks.

Who is Zirkzee?

The striker, described as a “complete player” started at Bayern Munich. He made his Bundesliga debut at 18 years old – and scored a stoppage-time winner with his first touch. His name is familiar to most football fans as he was once a rising star, though development slowed after spending three years with Bayern Munich II and an unsuccessful loan at Parma Calcio.

His first season at Bologna was as unsuccessful as his previous spell in Italy, playing under 1000 minutes and scoring just twice. However last campaign he impressed – scoring 11 and assisting four in the league.

He’d scored seven and assisted two before Christmas and, though form has marginally declined, it was a shock to see the 23-year-old missing from the provisional Dutch squad for Euro 2024. Zirkzee was only called up following injuries to his fellow countrymen.

This would be an exciting transfer for Manchester United, though questions could be asked about whether “exciting” is what the Red Devils need right now. They’ve already spent £72 million on a young striker and the club is unstable. They are not in a position to be taking any risks.
