George To Pen Fresh Terms At Chelsea

Winger Rewarded For Top Academy Performances

The news about George’s new deal at SW6 – reported by Fabrizio Romano – will be music to the ears of Chelsea fans, with the 18-year-old having a breakout season at Cobham in 23/24, scoring 14 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions, also getting 10 assists. Nine of those strikes came in the U18 Premier League, while he also featured ten times for the club’s U23 side, scoring three, proving his ability to play at a level well above his age group.

Unlucky Not To Make A Senior Appearance

Despite all the clamour around his talent (and rightly so), George described as anexciting wingerfailed to earn a minute for the senior team in the season just gone, featuring on the bench just three times under Mauricio Pochettino, one of those games being the Blues’ 6-0 drubbing of Everton in April, with Pochettino’s side 4-0 up at half-time – a scoreline and situation that would have been a perfect one to introduce George into to allow him to showcase his ability under no pressure.

However, the Argentine boss opted to bring on the likes of Ben Chilwell, Alfie Gilchrist and Cesare Casadei over him, frustrating several parts of the fanbase.

What The Future Holds for George

Romano citesThe Chelsea Projectin his revealing of the youngster’s new contract, a term that has been bandied about – everywhere you look since the Todd Boehly era began in South West London. Luckily, most, if not all fans have a soft spot for Cobham, which has produced the likes of Reece James, Conor Gallagher, and more recently Alfie Gilchrist, who have gone on to endear themselves to the Chelsea faithful, and they hope that George will be the next great player off the production line.

European football qualification was a minimum to achieve last season, and Chelsea just about made it, finishing 6th and thus qualifying for the Europa Conference League (Manchester United claiming a Europa League spot after winning the FA Cup). And while many have turned their nose up at this competition, which Chelsea should be favourites to win, it presents a perfect opportunity for George to get some deserved minutes next season, with the first-team regulars expected to be rested against some likely lesser opponents.

On the face of it, with the Blues likely to have Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Raheem Sterling, and to an extent ColePalmer (and even perhaps Michael Olise) as winger options next season, it will be a challenge for George to stake his claim should he be integrated into the Chelsea first team under Enzo Maresca, but with an extra competition for the club to compete in, it wouldn’t be silly to bet on the youngster becoming a household name at Stamford Bridge next year.
