Bayern Munich is set to open talks with Bayer Leverkusen for experienced defender, Jonathan Tah. The German has been tagged as a “priority target” and reportedly favors this domestic move over anything else.

Jonathan Tah Prefers a Domestic Transfer
Fabrizio Romano reports that Jonathan Tah is Bayern Munich’s ideal center-back signing for the summer transfer window. The player is equally as enthusiastic about the prospect of signing for the domestic competition, even more so than Premier League clubs.
The Bayer Leverkusen board has previously spoken about the player’s importance, encouraging him to sign a contract and commit to the club. The club director, Simon Rolfes, optimistically said, “My good feeling is that Jonathan Tah is staying and I am relaxed about that“.

The club’s CEO, Fernando Carro, remained realistic about the idea of losing the key defender. “We want to extend Jonathan Tah’s contract, he knows we trust him and we hope he stays“, he told SkyDE. “We’re not losing players for free so it’s extend or sell him this summer”. With this in mind, it seems that there is a high chance this transfer will go through, given the willingness of both parties.
Bayern Munich Look to Regain Domestic Control
Tah enjoyed a fantastic season with Bayer Leverkusen with an unbeaten run of 51 games across all competitions, winning the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal. He was at the heart of the team’s defence for most of it with 48 appearances across all competitions.
Now expected to represent Germany at the Euros, the powerful center-back has earned a good reputation for himself in Europe. At Bayern Munich, he would be able to join an experienced defensive set-up including the likes of Matthijs De Ligt, Dayot Upamecano, and Kim-Min Jae.

Similarly, for the German outfit, this is a great opportunity to secure additional defensive quality whilst also weakening a key competitor’s squad core. They were simply blown away by their domestic competition last season, which also marked the end of their 11-year dominance over their country’s football pyramid.
In a bid to regain that domestic control, Bayern Munich are sourcing talent directly from their competition, and Jonathan Tah would not be the first example of this. Robert Lewandowski, Leon Goretzka, and Manuel Neuer are all players who were poached from league competitors and have gone on to play important roles in the history of Die Roten.
