Elneny Ends Eight-Year Stay at Arsenal

The Longest-Serving Arsenal Player

On May 17, 2024, Mohamed Elneny posted a video on social media to announce his departure from the side after eight years. He thanked the fans for the support they had shown him throughout his time at the club. The North London club have now confirmed that the Egyptian international is among the 22 players to leave this summer. Apart from Elneny, they will also release Cedric Soares and youngsters like Arthur Okonkwo, Tyreece John-Jules, etc.

Elneny was the longest-serving player in the current squad. He was signed by former manager Arsene Wenger in 2016 from FC Basel and has been an important part of the rotation ever since. The contract extension that he had signed last year expired in June 2024.

Elneny Gets Emotional About Arsenal

In an interview with Arsenal on June 3, 2024, Mohamed Elneny described his time at the club as the best phase of his life. He said: “It’s meant a lot to me being here for so long, it was the best eight years of my life. I love this club so much, I love the fans, I love everything about Arsenal.”

Revealing the reason for not taking part in the final day lap of honour he said: “It breaks my heart – that’s why I refused to take to the field [on the lap of honour] because I was so full of emotion. But that’s life, my time here has come to an end and I’m very proud of what I’ve done for this club.”

What Does the Future Hold for Elneny?

At the moment it is unclear whether any other party is interested in signing Elneny. The 31-year-old midfielder will bring invaluable experience as he has made over 350 appearances. His club career has seen him play in Egypt, Switzerland, England, and Turkey. He would be a cost-effective and clever signing for any team.

Last year, the midfielder launched Elneny F.C, a football club named after him. It mainly focuses on reviving the careers of players released by their former clubs. Elneny might now pay more attention to the club he owns.
