Chelsea's Connor Gallagher Set to Stay

Chelsea’s Current Plans For Kieran McKenna Revealed

The Guardian’s Jacob Steinburg has reported that the Blues’ hierarchy are working swiftly intending to bring their managerial search to an end. It is added that they’re quite confident of doing that quickly after “notifying interest” to Ipswich Town in roping in McKenna as their new head coach.

Steinburg adds that Chelsea’s representatives had talks with the 38-year-old’s agents a few weeks ago and believe that he will also favor a move to Stamford Bridge rather than joining Brighton or Manchester United.

It is further stated that the London club’s officials feel that they are moving in the right direction in trying to recruit one of the best young coaches in England and that they consider the Northern Irishman as their “favoured candidate” to take up the job.

However, the Blues are also aware of interest from other parties. Because of the competition from fellow Premier League sides, Steinburg claims that Chelsea also has alternative plans in making a potential move for Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca if unable to rope in McKenna.

Steinburg also states that Chelsea are looking for a young, progressive head coach who will be ready to work under the recruitment structure that is looked after by co-sporting directors Lawrence Stewart and Paul Winstanley.

What Can McKenna Bring To Chelsea?

The main reason behind Chelsea having an interest in the Ipswich Town manager is because of the impressive work he’s done with them in the last three years. He took over the club in 2021, after having worked as an assistant at Manchester United for the likes of Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

McKenna helped Ipswich get promoted to the Championship from League One in the 2022-23 season and did one better in helping them secure a second-place finish in the 2023/24 Championship season and get them back to the Premier League.

McKenna, who was hailed as “phenomenal” last season due to his work at Ipswich, also won the LMA Manager of the Year and EFL Championship Manager of the Season award earlier this year.

The 38-year-old has overseen 131 matches as Ipswich’s manager, helping them win 76 games and score 257 goals! He prefers to play a 4-2-3-1 formation with a possession-based, attack-minded football, which is what the Chelsea hierarchy are looking for. It now remains to be seen if they can convince him to join them above the other sides anytime soon.
