How Manchester United Have Lined-up Recently

Manchester United have lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation all season, with André Onana in goal.

Diogo Dalot has been a mainstay at full back, with Casemiro, normally a midfielder, covering at centre-back amid a sustained defensive crisis. Next to the Brazilian, Jonny Evans started in the most recent game against Crystal Palace due to Harry Maguire’s injury absence, the latter having started the previous games next to Casemiro. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been starting consistently at full back, changing sides with Dalot depending on the match.

In midfield, 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo has been a mainstay, partnered recently by Christian Eriksen as Casemiro deputises at centre-back.

Alejandro Garnacho has been starting at left wing in recent games, with Antony occupying his favoured right side. In the number 10 position, Mason Mount replaced the injured Bruno Fernandes in Monday’s game at Selhurst Park, the first game the Portuguese has missed all season.

Rasmus Hojlund starts consistently in the centre-forward position.

Manchester United Recent Form and Tactics

Having won just one of their last seven fixtures, Manchester United have hit a terrible slump of form at the worst possible time, going from being in the conversation for fourth place to scrapping for sixth. Monday night’s 4-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace was possibly the nadir, the Red Devils producing an insipid and lifeless display.

It’s hard to know where to start with dissecting this wretched season for Erik ten Hag’s men. The middle of the park has been a huge issue all year, with the decline of the ageing Casemiro leading to huge swathes of space between the lines that opponents have exploited with glee, showcased by the record amount of shots the team has faced and the most goals conceded since the 1976/77 season.

There are mitigating circumstances for the Red Devils. An unprecedented injury crisis has seen over 60 different individual injuries, with manager Ten Hag having been forced to field more than 30 different defensive combinations over the course of the campaign.

Manchester United Injuries to Consider

Anthony Martial (Groin), Scott McTominay (Knee), Marcus Rashford (Ankle) and Lisandro Martinez (Calf) all have a chance of making the squad for Sunday’s game, with Victor Lindelof (Thigh), Luke Shaw (Thigh) and Raphael Varane (Muscle) all possibilities for the final fixture of the campaign at Brighton next weekend. Willy Kambwala (Muscle), Harry Maguire (Muscle) and Tyrell Malacia (Unknown) won’t be seen again this season. Mount is likely also done after suffering another injury and won’t feature until the 2024/25 competition.
