How Everton Have Lined Up
Everton have had minimal rotation through their defence throughout the season. The centre-back pairing of James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite has started in 31 Premier League matches this season. Jordan Pickford has been in the net for every league game, earning 11 clean sheets in the process. Vitaliy Mykolenko has started at left back when fit with Ashley Young and Ben Godfrey rotating into that position. The right side of defence has seen four players in action over the last three games, with Young and Godfrey being the most recent starters.
Idrissa Gueye has started the previous two matches in a defensive midfielder role. In front of him, Andre Gomes and James Garner have rotated alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure in the centre. Jack Harrison and Dwight McNeil are the first-choice wingers, the duo combining for 15 goal contributions this season.
Leading the line, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has reclaimed the starting position with Beto ruled out for the last game. The English striker has found the form that saw him debut for the Three Lions in 2020.
Everton Recent Form and Tactics
The Toffees have managed three consecutive 2-0 wins at home, with a 6-0 loss away to Chelsea interrupting a great run of form. This run has kept the club out of the relegation zone, currently sitting 16th and eight points clear of the drop.
Manager Sean Dyche has shifted the dynamic in the midfield in recent games. Doucoure was often deployed in a second striker role but became ineffective in the position as of late. He is now sitting deeper into the midfield allowing Gueye to be an out-and-out defensive midfielder. The Senegalese international is one of the best disruptors in the league, ranking in the top 5% for tackles and interceptions across Europe’s top five competitions.

This shift has meant that the formation played is now a 4-5-1 with DCL isolated up top. But the lack of support from the midfield has not stopped the striker from regaining form. The former Sheffield United striker went 19 appearances without a goal but has now scored three in four league games.
There is hope that DCL will be fit, he will be crucial to the game plan against Brentford. Both teams rank top seven in long balls, crosses, and aerial duels so expect this match to be decided in the air. The Toffees have two of the most prolific in that area with Calvert-Lewin and Tarkowski.
Everton Injuries To Consider
In this week’s press conference, Dyche outlined the fitness of the players in the squad. Calvert-Lewin is hopeful to get over a stomach bug come Saturday. Mykolenko is having scans and could be out for the remainder of the season, joining fellow wingback Nathan Patterson for a long stint in recovery. Club captain Seamus Coleman will also be unavailable leaving slim picking for wide defenders. Gueye has had calf issues throughout the season and was substituted early in the derby to manage the injury and hopefully be fit for this weekend’s match.
