What Roles Will Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes Take?

Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Reds are now close to striking an agreement with Edwards to bring him back to the club after he left them in 2022. It has been reported that Edwards will not be returning as a sporting director, which he operated in his previous stint. He will have a more senior role (director of football operations) with more power.

Romano adds that an agreement between Liverpool and the executive is “imminent” and that the final details of a contract have been discussed already, with the club now being confident of getting this deal over the line. The journalist also adds that Richard Hughes, the former Bournemouth technical director, is ready to move to Anfield to join up under Edwards in the post-Jurgen Klopp era. He is likely to take the role of sporting director, working alongside Edwards in the new set-up.

What Can Edwards And Hughes Bring To Liverpool?

Liverpool should benefit from the arrival of these two experienced individuals who will be highly involved in their recruitment of players. Edwards is considered to have played a vital role in helping build the team that won the Premier League title in the 2019/20 season, helping sign the likes of Mo Salah, Alisson, Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk during his time at Anfield.

Hughes, a former Bournemouth player, worked in a recruitment role with the club since 2014 before leaving the position of Technical Director recently. He has been praised for his influential role in the Cherries’ recruitment. Both Edwards and Richard are capable of identifying talent that can help Liverpool win titles and make signings for economic prices if they take control of the recruitment department.
