How Manchester United Have Lined Up Recently
Manchester United have mostly lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation this season, although this was adjusted in last weekend’s Manchester Derby, in which coach Erik Ten Hag deployed a 4-2-4-0 formation in an unsuccessful attempt to stifle Pep Guardiola’s team.
André Onana is a permanent fixture in goal, with Diogo Dalot a consistent starter at right-back. Raphael Varane has also been ever-present recently, mostly at right centre-back but also covering injury absences on the left side. One of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans have started alongside the Frenchman in the past three games.

In midfield, Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo have started together in all recent Premier League games, although the academy product was rested in the FA Cup victory over Nottingham Forest and replaced by Scott McTominay in the starting eleven.
Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes have been ever-present in recent matches, the Argentine alternating between the right wing and left wing depending on the availability of others. Omari Forson and Antony have rotated in on the wings to provide cover.
Marcus Rashford, on the left wing, has been deputising for the injured Rasmus Hojlund in the striker position of late.
Manchester United Recent Form and Tactics
After a run of seven games unbeaten through January and most of February, Manchester United have lost two of the three matches, with defeats at home to Fulham and away to Manchester City in the Premier League either side of a cup victory at Nottingham Forest severely harming the Red Devils’ chances of making the top four.

With many injury absentees, the team is struggling to establish control in midfield, leading to a lack of potency going forward and a porous and unsettled defence. A characteristic of recent games has been a half-hearted press by the forward line, making it easy to play around and opening up wide spaces in midfield that Casemiro and Mainoo have been unable to cover.
