How Bayern Munich Have Lined Up Recently

Against Leipzig, Bayern began with Manuel Neuer in goal. Joshua Kimmich and Raphael Guerreiro were the outside backs. Eric Dier played alongside Matthijs de Ligt in the centre of defence. Meanwhile, Leon Goretzka played in the holding role next to Aleksandar Pavlovic. Last but not least, Leroy Sané Thomas Müller, Jamal Musiala, and Harry Kane made up the front four.

Offensively, there was especially little rotation lately, due to the long-term injuries of Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman. On top of that, coach Thomas Tuchel has thus far refused to start youngster Mathys Tel or new signing Bryan Zaragoza. This means that Sané has almost always played, which has had an adverse effect on his fitness. Tuchel himself admitted as much during the pre-match press conference. The German international winger is currently suffering from various knocks, which according to the coach have visibly impacted his performance of late.

One cannot help but wonder why neither Tel nor Zaragoza have been given a chance to start, to if nothing else give Sané a rest.

In defence, on the other hand, there has been much more tinkering, especially since the January arrival of Dier in particular. But most changes have been enforced, through injuries and suspensions. Nonetheless, Dayot Upamecano and Min-jae Kim had been the go-to centre-back pairing for Tuchel more often than not when possible. Guerreiro has been replacing Alphonso Davies as left-back when the Canadian international is injured. Kimmich is largely the only option on the right, as Pavlovic replaces him in the holding midfield role next to Goretzka.

Bayern Munich Recent Form and Tactics

As noted above, the victory against Leipzig ended a three-match losing streak for the Bavarians. The fact that they beat a rival they had had much trouble with in recent seasons, should especially help them gain back some necessary confidence. Friday’s match in Freiburg is also the last game before Bayern’s pivotal Champions League encounter against Lazio, it is therefore important to continue to get spirits high again.
