How Manchester United Have Lined-up Recently
Manchester United line up almost exclusively in a 4-2-3-1 formation with André Onana a near-permanent fixture in goal.
In defence, Diogo Dalot has nailed down the right-back spot of late, with Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans rotating in the right centre-back spot. Lisandro Martinez has been in at left centre-back recently but picked up an injury against West Ham that will keep him out for a period of time. Luke Shaw is the starting left-back.

In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro are Erik ten Hag’s preferred options as a double pivot, with Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen rotating in when needed.
Concerning the advanced midfield roles, Alejandro Garnacho has made 19 starts in a row for the Red Devils, operating mostly on the right wing subject to Marcus Rashford’s availability on the left. Rashford himself has been starting the last few matches, whereas right-winger Antony has mostly been confined to a substitute role of late. Bruno Fernandes is a permanent fixture as the attacking midfielder (number 10) role.
Rasmus Hojlund has been Manchester United’s main striker in recent games.
Manchester United Recent Form and Tactics
Their form has improved of late, with the Red Devils unbeaten in all competitions since an away defeat to Nottingham Forest on December 30.
The return from injury of Martinez, Casemiro and Shaw, as well as the emergence of the brilliant Mainoo have transformed Manchester United’s style of play and enabled a much-needed increase in attacking fluidity.
Indeed, Ten Hag’s side have scored at least two goals in their last five games in all competitions, with the caveat that two of those were against lower-league opposition in the FA Cup. Martinez, in particular, hugely improves the team in terms of ball progression from the back.

Hojlund has three goals and two assists in his past three Premier League games, whilst Rashford has three goals in his last four.
Defensively, things have not been quite as sound. Despite being unbeaten in five games, the Red Devils have had a frustrating tendency to give away comfortable leads, particularly in the Premier League games against Wolves, and Tottenham Hotspur as well as the FA Cup tie against League Two Newport County, although a clean sheet last time out in a comfortable 3-0 victory over West Ham United will breed confidence.
Manchester United Injuries to Consider
Martinez picked up a knee injury in the second half of the win over the Irons, sustaining medial ligament damage that will keep him out for up to two months in what is a huge blow for Manchester United, both defensively and offensively.
Full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka suffered a new injury setback in training which will keep him out for the Aston villa game at a minimum.
Mason Mount, Tyrell Malacia and Anthony Martial remain on the sidelines with longer-term injuries.
