However, Law also states that Alonso could end up featuring strongly on Bayern Munich’s priority options if they aim to replace Thomas Tuchel at the end of the campaign. Meanwhile, it is added that De Zerbi could attract interest from Manchester United if they are willing to find a replacement for Erik ten Hag next season.

Law notes that prominent football directors and agents feel that Klopp’s decision to step down from Liverpool could cause a ripple effect in coaches changing clubs, as one told the Telegraph: “This promises to be a really big summer in terms of coaches moving between some of the top jobs. Klopp’s announcement is going to be just the start.”

Alonso, however, remained coy on his future when asked about possibly taking over the Anfield job next season and said: “I am not thinking about the next step. I am thinking about where I am right now. I am in a great place and I am enjoying myself. And I think it’s the right place, so that’s all I can say. What’s going to happen in the future? I don’t know and I don’t really care at the moment.”
