Manchester City have again positioned themselves in a place to contend for all three major competitions this campaign. However, one player who will not be available for these competitions is Kalvin Phillips.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano was one of the first to tweet the news that City had agreed to loan Kalvin Phillips to West Ham United. The 28-year-old defensive midfielder, who joined from Leeds United in 2022 for £42 million, has only made ten appearances for The Citizens this season.

Romano stated that Phillips’ medical tests were “booked on Wednesday.” He also stated that West Ham have an option to complete a permanent purchase of the midfielder. That decision will be made this summer after the midfielder has time to leave his mark for the London club.

Phillips’ Hefty Buyout Option

Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that West Ham’s option to purchase Phillips this summer is over £34 million. He did report that the Englishman’s “Medical is scheduled for Thursday,” which varies from Romano’s post, but both clubs are sure to want to see the move completed as early as possible.

Phillips’ large clause for a permanent move highlights City’s desire to get a return on their 2022 transfer. The midfielder did not establish himself in the club’s starting lineup. Described as “spectacular” especially due to his work at Leeds, he will hope to prove at West Ham that his career has plenty left to offer.
