One of Erik ten Hag’s key targets this past summer was Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong. The Dutchman’s agent held talks with those at Manchester United and Florian Plettenberg described them as “very positive.” No move materialized in 2023, but according to the German, it is expected that the 22-year-old will depart the club next year.

Leverkusen Expect Him to Leave
The Sky Sports Germany journalist’s tweet comes as a surprise following developments from this summer. Frimpong, it seemed, had the opportunity to depart the club now coached by Xabi Alonso, and contest for the United right-back spot. Next year, whether it be January or July, Ten Hag will have a second chance to get him for around £35 million.
Plettenberg was not vague in the language surrounding Frimpong’s desires. “Leverkusen expect him to leave the club in 2024. The 22 y/o is also very keen on a transfer.” The Dutchman has been on fire for the Bundesliga leaders so far this campaign. His six goals and seven assists have been crucial for maintaining the club’s two-point lead over German giants Bayern Munich.

October Contract Extension and Praise for Frimpong
Few would have predicted that the Red Devils would have gotten another opportunity with Frimpong so quickly. Liam Wood’s Manchester Evening News article appeared to be the final nail in the coffin for Ten Hag and United. With the 22-year-old signing a contract extension, his commitment to Alonso’s program seemed set in stone.

However, Frimpong will be a transfer target for several top European clubs in 2024. United can expect competition from Bayern and likely several other Premier League clubs. Described as a “special” player, the youngster has made a name for himself and is on the verge of landing a major transfer to a historic football outfit.
