A close defeat to Borussia Dortmund was bad enough for fans of the Magpies on Wednesday night. Their day was made worse, though, when manager Eddie Howe spoke about the details surrounding injuries sustained by Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy. The latter has a dislocated shoulder while the Swedish star is suffering from a recurring groin injury.

Henry Winter Reports
The Times‘ Chief of Football did not mince words when detailing the Magpies’ bad day. Describing the match as a “filthy night on Tyneside,” Winter believes that it could limit how far Newcastle goes in their domestic and continental campaigns this season. Isak was able to stay on for a time after going down early in the match but was eventually substituted by Howe. Murphy’s night was far different.

A staple for Newcastle the past three seasons, he has established himself for the Premier League club after a career spanning across 10 English clubs. Coming on in the second half to revitalize the Magpies’ attack, a tough knock left him in considerable pain requiring a substitution. It was a painful conclusion to a loss which the squad will need to bounce back from.
Howe’s Post-Game Press Conference
The Newcastle boss was in a blunt mood regarding the state of his player’s injuries. When asked about Isak and Murphy, he stated, “That’s the big disappointment of the night.” There is hope that the Swede will not endure a long stay off the pitch. However, a previous thigh injury sidelined him for months when he first arrived at St. James Park.
Howe expressed less optimism about Murphy’s dislocated shoulder. “It looks more serious,” he said when asked about it. While Isak left under his own power, the Englishman could be seen lying on the ground in agony. Two trainers accompanied him to the sideline as he used his kit to cradle his left arm. Newcastle is hoping for a speedy recovery from both players as they await an official diagnosis from trainers.
