Liverpool fought hard to ensure that they kept Mohamed Salah in their squad for the 2023/24 season, and Fabrizio Romano has now clarified the reports that they want to sign Sporting CP winger Pedro Goncalves.

Are Liverpool Really Interested in Goncalves?

According to reports, Liverpool are keen on signing Goncalves and are keeping an eye on his situation. Romano has clarified the validity of these rumours by stating that there is nothing concrete in these reports.

He adds that the Portuguese side wanted to keep him at the club for this season and were not prepared to negotiate with any club over a potential move in the summer window. Romano also reiterates that “for sure” Goncalves will be one to watch for years to come in the transfer market.

However, he mentioned that those close to him have guaranteed that there is nothing decided on him possibly leaving Sporting next year. The 25-year-old has a release clause of around £68.6 million – after signing a new contract, extending his stay in Lisbon until 2027.

What Has Goncalves Achieved At Sporting?

Goncalves joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017 but left having only made one appearance for the first team. He then moved to Portuguese side Famalicao in 2019, impressing in his first season with them and winning the Primeira Liga’s Young Player of the Year award in the 2019/20 season.

The 25-year-old joined Sporting in 2020 and has been impressive for them over the last three years. He won the Primeira Liga and the Taca da Liga in his debut campaign with the team and has been consistent for them. Goncalves, previously described as “excellent” by a former coach, has scored 59 goals and provided 34 assists in all competitions for Sporting and it remains to be seen if Liverpool actually make a firm move for him in the future.
