Newcastle United looked set to have a quiet end to the 2023 summer transfer window but have now made a move for Hugo Lloris out of nowhere.

Why Are Newcastle United Chasing Lloris?

The Times’ Martin Hardy has confirmed that Newcastle United have made an offer to sign Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on loan until the end of the season. He states that his approach has come “out of the blue” and that they will not be paying a fee for the deal.

Hardy also states that the 36-year-old has, so far, turned down a chance to move to the Magpies amid their desire to add him to their goalkeeper union. This is because of Karl Darlow being allowed to join Leeds United and Martin Dubravka being keen on a transfer too. Loris Karius is an option after his short-term deal was extended by the club.

The journalist claims that Eddie Howe wants another goalkeeper in his department to add more depth and believes that Lloris could be a solid addition. Hardy also states that if the Frenchman is unable to find a club in the summer, there’s a possibility that his contract is mutually contracted by Tottenham and he’s allowed to become a free agent.

On top of this, The Telegraph’s Matt Law has claimed that OGC Nice have also a contract with Lloris, but he is still not sure if he wants to go there.

What Happened to Lloris?

The 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning captain has had a difficult past year at North London. He has lost his position as the no.1 goalkeeper at the club to new signing Guglielmo Vicario and has not featured at all under Ange Postecoglou in their first few games of the Premier League season.

Lloris attracted a lot of criticism from Spurs fans last season for making errors in key moments and costing his side in quite a few matches. That forced the club to find a replacement for him and Lloris has been left to sort out his future ever since. The 36-year-old, who was hailed as a “fantastic leader” by ex-teammate Harry Kane last year, is now facing uncertainty over his future if he rejects a move to Newcastle.
