Medical Largely Completed in the Morning, ‘Now Time to Sign’
According to Romano, the main part of Caicedo’s examinations was completed at 9am BST on Monday. The young defensive midfielder is said to have already arrived in London ahead of his record-breaking transfer from the Seagulls to the 2021 UEFA Champions League winners.
Romano stated that with the completion of the medicals, it was time for the Ecuadorian to sign his contract. The deal will run through to 2031, with an option to extend to 2032.
David Ornstein Provides Latest Details
David Ornstein of The Athletic also tweeted about Caicedo’s completed examinations. He offered further confirmation that the deal sending the 21-year-old to West London would run for eight years, with an option to add one more year.
Ornstein also mentioned the fees involved in the transfer: £115 million including a £15 million add-on that is seen as “achievable,” in addition to a sell-on clause for Brighton. Those total fees, as noted by many media outlets, make Caicedo the biggest transfer in English top-flight history.
Watch: How Liverpool and Chelsea Are Changing Transfers
Snatched from Liverpool
Liverpool had attempted to hijack Chelsea’s pursuit of Caicedo but were unable to complete a deal as it was the player’s intent to move to Stamford Bridge. Sky Sports even noted that the Merseyside club expected to host their own medical tests on Friday. Regardless, Jurgen Klopp’s side have been trumped in this transfer saga, leaving them to focus on other targets.
Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher also said that he was “desperate for [Caicedo] to come to Liverpool as the need for him there is probably greater”. Now, though, the Ecudorain starlet will lend his coveted skills to Chelsea and try to lead them back to European football.
