‘Internal Disciplinary Matter’ – Leeds United Star Attempts to Force Move as Club State He’s ‘Not For Sale”

Last Word on Football has learned from a Leeds United press release that Willy Gnonto is set to face “internal disciplinary action” for his refusal to play against both Birmingham City and Shrewsbury Town. In spite of his drive for a move, the Whites have reiterated that the Italian winger is “not for sale”.

Willy Gnonto Facing ‘Internal Disciplinary Action’ from Leeds United

Why is Willy Gnonto Forcing a Move?

The Italian international has been consistently linked with a move away from Elland Road, with Everton being the most likely destination. As one of the few players at Leeds without a relegation release clause, he is in a much weaker position than the likes of Rasmus Kristensen and Robin Koch. They have already departed thanks to clauses negotiated between their agents and Victor Orta upon joining the Whites.

Gnonto’s first tactic to force a departure was to refuse to play in the Carabao Cup against Shewsbury. By extending this to the match against Birmingham this weekend, the club has no choice but to take a firm stance.

How Will Leeds United Respond?

There are a few different ways the Whites can respond to this news, the first of which is by fining him some of his wages. However, this is relatively harsh action and is only likely to harden the players’ stance. Daniel Farke’s side don’t gain anything by having an upset player that keeps refusing to play on the books, so improving morale is sure to be a priority.

Simultaneously, Gnonto himself cannot afford to keep himself away from regular football for an extended period of time. By playing regular matches he increases his chances of securing a place in the Euro 2024 squad for Italy. Although a spot in Serie A or the Premier League would help even more, he doesn’t benefit at all by staying off the pitch.
