Last Word on Football understands from anonymous sources that in spite of Fabrizio Romano’s report on Wilfried Gnonto wanting a move to Everton from Leeds United, the Italian is opposed to a move but the Merseyside club is “his only option” for a return to the Premier League.
Wilfried Gnonto ‘Doesn’t Want’ Everton Move from Leeds United
Why is Wilfried Gnonto Leaving Leeds United?
There are a few reasons the Italian is likely to leave Elland Road, with the first being Euro 2024 taking place next summer. Competition for places in the Italy squad is incredibly high, with the likes of Federico Chiesa and Vincenzo Grifo both putting in impressive shifts.
Playing in the Championship is likely to harm the Italian’s chances of securing a position in the squad, with the second tier being far less attractive. In spite of Gnonto seemingly not suiting Everton’s style of play, his quality is still more than enough to perform in the Premier League.

Everton’s Negotiations with Leeds United
According to Phil Hay, the winger is still firmly in Daniel Farke’s plans for the season ahead. Combined with his lack of release clause following relegation, the Whites are in a surprising position of power over their former relegation rivals.
49ers Enterprises’ negotiation team are likely to invest a lot of time and money into sending a message with the Gnonto deal. By getting as much of a fee as possible from a prospective buyer, the Elland Road club can not only reinvest in weaker areas of the squad, but demonstrate to other interested parties that they won’t roll over at the first sign of Premier League interest.

How Will the Winger Fit in at Everton?
Gnonto is talented, without a shadow of a doubt, and typically plays as an inside forward floating in from the left-hand side. His deft dribbling and intelligent passing set him apart from his peers, cutting open rival defences. For an idea of his peak performances, the Whites’ victory over Cardiff City last season is the perfect demonstration.
