The news of West Ham’s pursuit of Alvarez comes at a critical juncture for the club. With the departure of former-captain Declan Rice to Arsenal, the Hammers have been actively seeking reinforcements to strengthen their squad.
Previous Rejected Premier League Links
During the previous summer transfer window, Alvarez attracted interest from Premier League giants Chelsea. The Blues made a substantial £43 million offer to Ajax for the services of the talented midfielder. However, a deal failed to materialise, and the versatile playmaker continued his impressive performances for the Dutch side.

He joined Ajax in 2019 from Club America and has been a consistent presence in their lineup. The ever-present star featured in 44 matches across all competitions last season, predominantly operating as a defensive midfielder. Ward-Prowse Negotiations Hit Roadblock
While negotiations for Alvarez progress, West Ham’s pursuit of Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse has faced hurdles. Steinberg reports that the Hammers “remain unwilling to go over £30m” for the Englishman. This perhaps suggests that the Hammers are prioritising their pursuit of Alvarez and have set a financial limit for Ward-Prowse’s potential transfer.
