‘A Race Between Man City, Man Utd and Juventus’: Plettenberg Releases Update On Spectacular Defender

David Raya

German transfer official Florian Plettenberg tweeted a big update on one of the most highly-anticipated transfer sagas of 2024. Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard will not sign a contract extension with the club and will be a free agent when his contract runs out in the summer of 2024.

The Manchester clubs remain the most likely destination for the right-back, who can also play centre-back, but Juventus have been monitoring the situation as well. City defender Kyle Walker has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, and there were rumours that a swap deal could be organised this summer, but that has been placed on ice.

Bayern will wait patiently for a solid offer to be made. In the meantime, the club will look to get the most out of Pavard in his final season with the Bavarian giants. Bayern will likely be in the top five or top three odds to win the Champions League, and Pavard could leave the club while winning one more European title.

Benjamin Pavard Wants Bayern Departure

Some Chance Defender Leaves This Summer

One player at the top of Bayern’s summer-signings chart is Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane. Kane seems to favour the Bundesliga club over other clubs in England or abroad, but Bayern have yet to meet Tottenham’s pricetag for the star man.

It has been reported that Bayern might be willing to offer Pavard to Tottenham in a package deal that also has them sending a fair amount of cash. This potential player swap would gift Bayern with a world-class striker, and Tottenham with a world-class defender.

Frenchman A Coveted and Decorated Defender

As City, United and Juventus all circle around Pavard and Bayern with the hopes of signing the player sooner than next summer, Pavard patiently waits for whatever his career brings him next. The Frenchman, at 27 years old, is at the peak of his career, even if he has already won so much.

With the French national team, Pavard has won the 2018 World Cup and the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League. At club level, with VFB Stuttgart, he secured promotion to the Bundesliga 2016/17 and helped keep the club afloat in the league for some years. Following his 2019 move to Munich, he instantly won the treble that season, the Club World Cup the next season, and has secured the domestic league title every season with the club.

Aside from his notable defending IQ and tracking skills, Pavard’s speed and shooting skills make him lethal on both ends of the pitch. He scored a crucial goal for France in the 2018 World Cup against Argentina – a strike that tied the match at the moment and was voted goal of the tournament. There is no mystery as to why so many teams want him, and if he does stay in Germany until 2024 then his signature will surely be fought for next summer.
