England Goal Sparks Melee in U21 Final
Unsavoury scenes erupted between both dugouts in first-half stoppage time, as Cole Palmer’s deflected free-kick gave the Young Lions a crucial lead in the UEFA U21 European Championship final.
Palmer celebrated by sprinting over and glaring at the Spanish bench, who were furious that an alleged handball had not been given by Norwegian referee Espan Eskas. Backroom staff clashed on both sides, with England assistant coach Ashley Cole sent off alongside a member of the Spanish support team.

Gomez was far from pleased with the 21-year-old’s antics when questioned post-match:
“It surprised me. He didn’t want to apologise or anything like his other teammates. I don’t know, I would have celebrated it in a different way and my teammates would have done it in a different way as well.”
James Trafford’s Heroics Come To England’s Rescue
VAR awarded Santi Denia’s side a penalty in the ninth minute of injury time, as Levi Colwill was adjudged to have brought down forward Abel Ruiz.
The number nine stepped up, but record-breaking Trafford produced a stunning double save to maintain his sixth straight clean sheet, a record in this UEFA competition, sparking over-zealous celebrations on the pitch and touchline alike, which once again did not go unnoticed:
“They have the attitude they want to have. This is not the first time something like this has happened with this team. We have tried to represent our country in the best possible way and have the utmost respect for all our rivals. They wanted to celebrate it like this and also after the missed penalty.
“There are some England players who have not been able to win. Very ugly gestures on their part. A large part of the team has come to console us, which is an honour for them. We have behaved.”
Tensions may arise between representatives of the Three Lions and the 22-year-old defender when they return for pre-season in Manchester.
