According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Joel Robles is “yet to make a return” at Thorp Arch to train with Leeds United. This leaves the Whites in a perilous goalkeeping situation, as the Spaniard took over first-team goalkeeping duties from Illan Meslier late last season, who is also sure to attract attention in the market.

What is Joel Robles’ Contract Situation?
The Whites’ goalkeeping situation was complex at the end of last season, as Robles took over from an out-of-form Meslier in net. That situation has gotten more complicated still. Robles has no contract with the Elland Road side, and whilst he was invited back to training with the squad, he is under no obligation to do so. Adam Forshaw, in a similar situation, has been offered a contract by Leeds and is likely to return.

Leeds United Could Look to Newcastle United
The Leeds United hierarchy are likely left in a difficult spot. In the event that both Joel Robles and Illan Meslier leave the club, youngster Kristoffer Klaesson is the only remaining goalkeeper with any senior minutes for the side. Thankfully the club are already looking to invest in their back line.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s report, Newcastle United’s Karl Darlow is the main target that the club has between the sticks. Darlow impressed in a loan at Hull City recently, and may be looking for first-team football in the Championship over a move to be a backup in the Premier League yet again.

What Daniel Farke Needs in a Goalkeeper?
A goalkeeper in the German’s system is ideally one that is happy with the ball at their feet. Farke plays a highly possession-oriented game, so starting that from the back with someone confident enough to pass the ball around is a must.
