Steinburg adds that Onana would personally favour a move to Old Trafford rather than Stamford Bridge if he was to join the Premier League. It’s also stated that Erik ten Hag wants to sign a new goalkeeper after being unconvinced with David de Gea’s distribution ability, which causes some issues in properly implementing his style of playing out of the backline.
It’s also claimed that the Red Devils are also considering FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as an alternative goalkeeping target, but they are ready to fight with their English rivals for the Inter star. Onana is known to be really impressive with ball distribution and Mauricio Pochettino’s side has already had talks with the Italian club over the possibility of signing him.
Could Erik Ten Hag Reunite With Onana?
The 27-year-old goalkeeper actually received his big break in Europe thanks to Ten Hag, who entrusted him to be Ajax’s number one goalkeeper under him after he took over the club in 2017. Onana has since gone on to leave the Eredivisie giants and joined the Nerrazzuri last year and ended up having a really solid debut campaign.

Last season, the ex-Barcelona academy product made 41 appearances in all competitions and managed to keep 19 clean sheets. Onana’s heroism for the Italian side even won over Pep Guardiola, who hailed him as an ‘exceptional’ goalkeeper before the Champions League final. The Cameroonian possesses the qualities and knowledge of how to thrive under the United manager’s style, but it remains to be seen if he can be reunited with his ex-gaffer anytime soon.
