‘Young, Hungry, Dynamic’ Doncaster Rovers Sign Midfielder From Sheffield United for Undisclosed Fee

Doncaster Rovers Sign Midfielder

Doncaster Rovers have completed a fourth signing since the arrival of Grant McCann as manager with Sheffield United midfielder George Broadbent arriving for an undisclosed fee.

Broadbent has signed a two-year contract with Rovers, with the option of an additional year.

At 22 years old, he is the youngest arrival of the transfer window and the first the club has paid a fee for after owner Terry Bramall promised a ‘major investment of funds’ into the playing budget for 2023/24.

Broadbent’s Career So Far

Broadbent leaves Sheffield United without featuring for the first team. Instead, he has gained valuable experience, including during the 2022/23 season with Boreham Wood, who reached the National League playoff semi-finals, losing to eventual playoff winners Notts County.

The midfielder scored six goals in 42 appearances for Boreham Wood.

He has already experienced League Two with Rochdale in 2021/22, scoring once in 21 league appearances.

Broadbent had joined Sheffield United from the Manchester United academy setup.

Grant McCann Looking to Turn Dismal Few Years Around

Returning Rovers boss Grant McCann is seeking to change the mood of the club after a dismal two years, including relegation from League One under Gary McSheffrey in 2021/22.

McCann replaced Danny Schofield after the season’s close and his return has already unleashed newfound excitement around the club.

His Rovers side in 2018/19 pushed for promotion to the Championship, losing to playoff winners Charlton Athletic on penalties in the semi-final.

New signing Broadbent told the club website: “I’m really pleased to get the deal done. Doncaster is a really good opportunity to show what I can do and hopefully be successful this season with the team and push on in my career.

“It’s an exciting project the gaffer is building on and he’s someone that’s had success in the past. It’s an opportunity for me to come and excite people.”

Manager Grant McCann added: “I’m delighted to get George signed. He had a tremendous season last year at Boreham Wood and we’re absolutely delighted to get him in.

“He’s a player that can penetrate between full backs and centre halves, he likes to run into the box. He’s a physical presence as well. He’s young, hungry, dynamic and I think he’ll complement brilliantly what we’ve already got in midfield.

“It’s a great signing for the club and one I think we can develop over the next few years.”

Yesterday, Rovers confirmed midfielder Zain Westbrooke’s had signed a one-year deal to continue with the club after signing as a free agent in March.
