According to a new report from Fabrizio Romano (via Absolute Chelsea), Chelsea have been “really, really pushing” for the signing of Manuel Ugarte over the past 24-48 hours.
The Paris Saint-Germain target is subject to interest from both clubs, with the London side stepping up their chase with the official announcement of Mauricio Pochettino.

Midfield Needs
There is a major need for new midfielders at Stamford Bridge with the current core largely underperforming or getting older. Enzo Fernandez has proved to be a fantastic signing, but there is some help needed on the defensive end which the Sporting CP player can provide.

The 22-year-old has been employed as a defensive midfielder in a number of systems for his current side and excelled at the role, even being labelled as an “outstanding destroyer” in the middle of the park.
Competition
The Blues will have to fend off the bright lights and big money of the Ligue 1 Champions who are also chasing the signing of the midfielder. European football could make the difference in the race but the Uruguayan international could also prefer the Premier League over France’s top division.

With the appointment of a new manager and hopes of turning the club around it comes as no surprise that Chelsea are pushing heavily for this signing. They know changes are needed with a defensive-minded midfielder being one of them.
With the current young core being assembled at Stamford Bridge many fans would be pleased to see the addition of the 22-year-old who could go on to form an excellent midfield partnership with Fernandez for years to come. Despite a torrid season for many Blues fans, the future could be very bright if the right moves are made.
