Former Southampton and Charlton Athletic boss Nigel Adkins has taken a key role with League Two side Tranmere Rovers.
Adkins, who managed The Saints in the Premier League has been introduced as Tranmere’s technical director – a new role for the club.
The 58-year-old hasn’t had a managerial role since his sacking by Charlton in 2021 and has opted to move upstairs in his latest appointment.
He will oversee key football processes within the club, including recruitment, development and management, whilst acting as a mentor and advisor to the club’s manager Ian Dawes.

Nigel Adkins’ Tranmere Rovers Return ‘Too Big to Turn Down’
On joining Tranmere Rovers as technical director, Adkins told the club website: “The opportunity to come back to Tranmere Rovers, my home-town club where it all started as an apprentice professional footballer, and to work with my former teammate Mark Palios was too big to turn down.
“There is a vision to improve and develop and I’m excited to be part of the process.”
Adkins was a goalkeeper in his playing days, starting out with Tranmere before spells with Wigan Athletic and Bangor City.

Tomorrow (Monday, May 7), Rovers will take on Northampton Town on League Two’s final day of the season. They have only one place to gain with a potential 10th-place finish on the table, however, they could fall to as low as 15th.
Northampton are once again playing for automatic promotion after losing out on goals scored to Bristol Rovers, who tore Scunthorpe United apart on the final day, last year.
Mark Palios Putting Tranmere Rovers Jigsaw Together With Former Southampton Boss Appointed
Club chairman Mark Palios added: “Appointing Nigel to this important role is the final piece in the jigsaw we have been assembling.
“As a former Tranmere player, a physiotherapist and a hugely experienced manager, Nigel is uniquely well-placed to sit across the club’s critical football processes.
“His wise counsel will doubtless be invaluable to Ian Dawes as he seeks to make his mark as an up-and-coming manager.
“With Nigel, Ian Dawes, Neil Danns, Andy Parkinson and the returning Andy Hodgen all playing integral roles within the team-behind-the-team, I think we have assembled an exciting group of professionals to give us a platform for success.”
Dawes, formerly assistant manager at the club, was appointed as manager days ago whilst in a stint as caretaker following Micky Mellon’s sacking earlier this season.
All efforts will now be on building the club this summer towards having a good season next season.
