Manchester United are in the final stages of agreeing a new contract with David de Gea, claims Fabrizio Romano. The Spaniard’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season.

De Gea Eager to Stay at United
Last year when they activated an automatic one-year extension on the contracts of Marcus Rashford and multiple other players, United opted against doing the same for De Gea – because they want him to sign a new deal with lower wages.

Romano adds that the Spanish goalkeeper is eager to stay at Old Trafford and a decision over his next contract is now really close. The Red Devils are now discussing the final clauses of his contract and the feeling around an agreement is very positive.
De Gea is reported to be earning whopping wages of £375,000 a week, which is more than what any other goalkeeper in the world earns. United feel this is too high for a goalkeeper to earn, but Romano claims that they are optimistic that he will remain their no.1 goalkeeper next season and agree to a new contract that pleases all parties.
De Gea Focused On Ending Season Strongly With United
As talks continue over a new contract, the experienced goalkeeper is currently focused on ending the season strongly with the Red Devils. He is currently leading the Premier League Golden Glove race, having kept 14 clean sheets in 30 league appearances for Erik ten Hag’s side.

He has kept 21 clean sheets in all competitions for the club this season, having one of the best clean sheet records in Europe this season. With United reported to be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper signing in the summer, De Gea is aware that he has to consistently perform at a high level to keep his role as the undisputed no.1 at the club. The 32-year-old, who was recently hailed as a ‘really complete player’ by Ten Hag, is hoping to end the campaign with more trophies with the team – having already won the Carabao Cup title.
