Tranmere Rovers have sacked manager Micky Mellon following a 3-1 home loss to Newport County on Saturday, March 18.

The League Two side sit 14th and have won just three of their last 10 games. Rovers are 11 points adrift of the play-off places.

Tranmere Rovers Sack Boss Micky Mellon

Micky Mellon’s Second Spell Not as Successful

Mellon, 51, enjoyed a more fruitful first spell as Tranmere boss when taking them to back-to-back promotions via the play-offs in the National League and League Two in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

He initially left the club in 2020 to return to Scotland with Dundee United before returning in 2021 in a spell that hasn’t worked out as successfully as the first.

Mellon’s side have regressed from last season having finished that campaign two points shy of a play-off place.

His dismissal follows consecutive losses against teams further down the table in Gillingham and Newport County.

Club Looking Towards Next Season

In a club statement, chairman Mark Palios said: “From both a personal and a club perspective this hasn’t been an easy decision.

“Micky has a special place in the hearts of Tranmere fans thanks to the back to back promotions in 2018 and 2019.

“Since he returned to the club in 2021 after a year in Scotland, we haven’t managed to achieve the success we both wanted and I reluctantly came to the conclusion that a change was needed as we start recruitment preparations for next season.

“I would like to thank Micky for his contribution and efforts in both managerial stints at the club.”

Ian Dawes has been placed in temporary charge ahead of Tranmere’s trip to Colchester United on Saturday, March 25. The club state Dawes will be in charge, assisted by Andy Parkinson, ‘whilst options are considered in preparation for the new season’.
