Manchester United are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, as per Sport1 journalist Patrick Berger. Their current number-one goalkeeper David de Gea’s deal runs out in the summer and the Red Devils did not trigger the one-year extension on his current deal as they did for other players last year.

United Facing Chelsea Competition for Kobel Signing
The Manchester giants have been highly reliant on De Gea this season, with the Spaniard featuring in most of their matches so far. He is also reported to be willing to take a major pay cut on his salary to sign a new deal, but it appears that United could be looking at other options.

Berger even goes on to state that the Red Devils’ representatives had a meeting with the agents of the Switzerland goalkeeper. This happened when Dortmund traveled to London to play their Champions League Round of 16 second-leg game against Chelsea last week – which they ended up losing in disappointing fashion.
Moreover, it is also added that the Blues are also very interested in signing Kobel and are keen on strengthening their goalkeeper position in the summer. Berger adds that both United and Chelsea want a goalkeeper who “is their number one for the next eight to ten years” – with the Red Devils aware of De Gea’s aging presence and the London side not totally convinced about Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Kobel’s Stance Amid Interest From Premier League Giants
The 25-year-old goalkeeper has been in splendid form for the Bundesliga giants this season and played a key role in helping them stay alive in the league title race. Berger states that Dortmund have no intention of selling Kobel in the near future and wants to keep him.

The Swiss goalkeeper himself also wants to stay for at least one more season to continue his development at Dortmund. However, the German journalist adds that at some point in the future, Kobel might want to ponder on a move to a major European club.
He has a contract until 2026 with Dortmund, but there is no release clause in his contract – which could make it even harder for United or Chelsea to sign him for a fair price. Kobel – who has been praised as a ‘colossal custodian’ by the official Bundesliga website – has made 25 appearances and kept 12 clean sheets this season.
