FIFA World Cup Group G Predictions: Brazil Looks Set to Take Top Spot

Group G

Brazil start as one of the strong favourites for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The focus is around whether they can go all the way this December, but there are three other teams in their group. Here is Last Word on Football’s prediction for Group G.

FIFA World Cup Group G Preview

Brazil Looks Set to Top Group G

Kicking things off with the team to beat, Brazil. Tite has been at the helm since 2016 and he led them to Copa America glory in 2019. He will now go in search of his first World Cup title, with the squad looking strong throughout. In between the sticks, Alisson and Ederson are two of the best in the world and they continue to compete at the national team level.

In defence, there is an ageing cohort of fullbacks featuring Dani Alves, Alex Sandro, Danilo and Thiago Silva centrally. Eder Militao (Real Madrid) and Bremer (Juventus) are the two younger names and they have both been performing well. The question remains as to whether they can oust their more experienced teammates.

Casemiro and Fabinho at the base of midfield are the go-to players, whereas it is a frontline for the ages. Neymar and Vinicius are the two-star attractions, plus Arsenal duo Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli have played their way into Tite’s plans. For Brazil in World Cup Group G, they seem likely to start and finish at the top of it. Making their way through the knockout rounds won’t be as easy, but they have everything they need to write their names into history once again.

Cameroon Have the Talent to Qualify

From South America to Africa and there are several different leagues represented in the Cameroon squad. MLS, Premier League, Championship, Ligue 1 and Serie A are all going to be on show, as well as Elite One, their own league.

Two of the key names ply their trade in Italy in the form of Andre Onana and Andre-Franck Zambo Anguissa. The former has superseded Samir Handanovic in the Inter Milan pecking order when it comes to the number one spot and the latter is a key cog in the Napoli system under Luciano Spalletti.

It isn’t a done deal that Brazil will top the group but it seems likely that there will be a battle for the best of the rest behind A Selecao. Rigobert Song, formerly of West Ham United and Liverpool, will fancy his Cameroon side and their chances of getting the job done. Forward Souaibou Marou is the sole player who plays in his home country and being born in 2000, he clearly has a bright future.

Serbia Will Look To Mitrovic and Vlahovic to Help Them Reach the Last 16

Dubbing teams a dark horse has gone poorly for football fans in the past regarding major tournaments. Turkey were that team at the Euros last summer and now a lot of people are excited to see what damage Serbia can do in World Cup Group G. A mixture of youth and experience that complement each other well could explode onto the scene, managed by Dragan Stojkovic at his first major tournament.

The final third is where Serbia will be most dangerous, with strike duo Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic in particular. Mitrovic is performing admirably for Fulham, thriving in the Premier League whilst Vlahovic has carried his Fiorentina form over to his new side Juventus.

Along with them, Dusan Tadic, Filip Kostic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic are a key trio who will surely bring something else to the table. Tadic is a stalwart for both club and country plus the other two are thriving players who will be looking to make a name for themselves in their iconic red jersey.

An Experienced Switzerland Squad Aim to Roll Back the Years

Finally then to Switzerland, a European side who are ever-present on the biggest stage. Xherdan Shaqiri’s magic when playing for his country has created many memorable moments over the years, with that thunderous left foot of his causing a lot of damage.

Shaqiri is one of a number of players used to playing in these major events. Others include Granit Xhaka, Yann Sommer, Haris Seferovic, Ricardo Rodriguez and Fabian Schar. They have all been part of some great Swiss teams over the years, one of the few changes being on the sidelines. Vladimir Petković was in charge for seven years before going on to manage Bordeaux, Murat Yakin being his replacement.

That continuity has always been vital for their success, but the next generation is on its way through. At the fore of this is Noah Okafor, a 22-year-old forward for Austrian side RB Salzburg. Most of their older heads are further back, so Okafor will primarily feature alongside Breel Embolo (Monaco) and Ruben Vargas (Augsburg).

Prediction for FIFA World Cup Group G

It has been alluded to previously, so Last Word on Football predicts that Brazil will come out on top in their group. It is a toss-up between the other three – and it could go any way. Switzerland vs Serbia is a battle between the experienced and the not-so-experienced, with Serbia prevailing. Cameroon could feasibly come second, but they will instead come third, with an ageing Swiss squad bringing up the rear.
