Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea Not in Advanced Talks for 99-Goal Winger

Leandro Trossard

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that despite the links, Chelsea are not in an advanced position to sign Brighton & Hove Albion winger Leandro Trossard next year. The Belgium international was a key player for Graham Potter during his time with the Seagulls and has maintained his good form since the Englishman left to manage the West London club, which has inevitably lead to the Belgium international being linked to his former manager’s new team.

Brighton Likely to Extend Trossard’s Soon-To-Expire Contract

The 27-year-old winger has been in impressive form for Brighton this season, even scoring a remarkable hat-trick in their 3-3 draw against Liverpool at Anfield, becoming only the third player in history to match the achievement. The Belgian’s contract with the Seagulls is set to expire in June 2023, which is why the transfer talks around him are increasing.

However, Romano adds that Brighton are calm about the situation as they are set to activate a clause in his contract that will allow them to extend his contract until June 2024. With Brighton currently sat in 8th place of the Premier League thanks in part to Trossard’s strong start to the season, it should only be a matter of time before the Seagull’s activate the clause.

When it comes to the Chelsea links, Romano claims that it’s normal due to his connection with Potter and their close relations. However, there is nothing advanced in negotiations between the Blues and the 27-year-old who is currently focused on other things in his career.

The Belgian winger himself addressed the links to Stamford Bridge, where he said: “It’s very difficult to answer that (Chelsea rumours). So that will have to wait until after the World Cup.”

It appears that Trossard is currently laser-focused on playing in the Qatar World Cup with Belgium and help his side strongly contest for the trophy. After that will he only think about a potential move to Chelsea or any other club next year. The 27-year-old, who has been termed as a ‘unique talent’ in the past has scored 99 goals and provided 42 assists across his career – including 23 goals and 13 assists in 110 appearances for Brighton in the Premier League.
