Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea Have £70 Million Clause to Sign 129-Goal Striker – But There’s a Catch

Tammy Abraham

Chelsea still have the option to bring back striker Tammy Abraham from AS Roma if they want to, confirms Fabrizio Romano. This is due to a £70 million buy-back clause which they had inserted into the agreement after deciding to sell him in 2021.

Chelsea Have the Option to Re-Sign Tammy Abraham From AS Roma

Chelsea Yet to Contact Tammy Abraham About Potential Return

The London side decided to sell the England international in last year’s summer transfer window after signing Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan. Abraham was unwilling to be a backup option anymore and wanted to play regularly, which is why they allowed him to join Jose Mourinho’s side last season.

It turned out to be a brilliant move for the England international, as he scored 27 goals in all competitions last season and became a hero in Rome. Romano adds that after selling him for about £35 million last year – Chelsea have the option to bring him back from the 2023 summer transfer window onwards for double that price. The ball is in their court, knowing they can trigger that particular clause from next summer.

The Blues signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona on deadline day as they needed a new striker after selling Timo Werner and loaning out Lukaku. But with the Gabon international being in his final years, Graham Potter’s side needs a better long-term option. Romano adds that their deal to sign Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig is nearly done, but ‘we’ll see’ what happens with the Abraham situation – as Chelsea could go for another striker because of Nkunku not being a natural no.9 option.

Abraham Holds the Right to Make Decision Over His Future

While the Blues have the option to trigger the buy-back clause for the 25-year-old centre-forward next summer, the deal will depend upon Abraham himself. Indeed, Romano adds that a deal can only go through if he agrees to a return to Stamford Bridge.

The Englishman is currently happy at Roma after being taken in amazingly by their supporters. The 25-year-old has 129 career club goals so far, of which 29 are with the Italian club in just a year. A potential return to Stamford Bridge next year all depends on the player and if Chelsea are willing to dish out £70 million for him.
